Instructions:
1. Pre-Production
a. Plan the story idea – what is the focus of the story? What question will you ask? Are you looking to offer an argument/answer or to investigate the problem from all sides?
Focus
The focus of the story is to update the audience of the recent success and what people have to look forward to in regards to the Canadian Men’s National Team. It will provide an accurate insight on the team to football fans and Canadians in general.
The Question
This team has been underperforming and has gone virtually unnoticed for the last few decades. Why should Canadians and the rest of the world take notice of this team?
The Argument
This will be an argumentative piece, as it will aim to share the selling-points of the team and the future events that this nation has to look forward to. Furthermore, this video is modelled to reduce any further skepticism of the Men’s program.
Working Storyboard
Interview Questions:
- Can you share with us some recent results and what those mean to Canadian soccer?
- Which players in particular should newer fans be watching out for? What regions do these players play their club football?
- What do you think could be a major turning point for Canadian Soccer in the future?
- What else is Canada doing to grow and develop its game, as well as its players?
- What is the significance of a league such as the Canadian Premier League to younger Canadian footballers?
Problem/Issue – Many people are still skeptical or unfamiliar with Canadian Soccer.
Q & A with Griffin Jaager – Summary
Recent Results
Scene 1: “This team deserves the attention of football fans and all Canadians across the nation. The Canadian Men’s National Team is doing the unthinkable by taking down some of the World Cup regulars, such as Costa Rica and beating the 10th ranked Mexico within the span of three days.”
Player Focus
Scene 2: “The best player on the team by far is Alphonso Davies. He has a high soccer IQ, physically strong and is one of the fastest players in the world. All of this, while only being a 21 year old. The world should be paying attention to this player, as he could lead Canada to its first World Cup in over 35 years.”
Potential Turning Point
Scene 3: “The 2026 FIFA World Cup is nearing, this is the largest global sports tournament and is only held every four years. There will be matches played in Canada and possibly even Vancouver! This will be one of the ultimate opportunities to prove to the world that football is one of Canada’s top sports. A major tournament such as this could only improve upon Canada’s growing engagement within the sport.”
The Impact of the Canadian Premier League
Scene 4: “The foundation of the Semi-Pro league, the Canadian Premier League has become a major influence upon the game as well. This league gives players the ability to still live at home and be officially employed by a team (with payment), rather than taking the collegiate route and being unpaid. This pathway has already proven to be a proper way to showcase undiscovered talent closer to home. Additionally, this has also provided smaller cities with an engagement opportunity. Many cities that do not already have professional clubs have the ability to provide locals with a team to follow. For example, Pacific FC has taken off in Victoria, B.C. as many who reside on the island are not able to travel all the way to Vancouver for a Major League Soccer match.
